a new era

He was to me a stranger
Who visited now and then
When he was feeling angry
I would hide in my secret den
*
H e said I was a little sissy boy
Because I was close to my mother
I was told he was a merchant sailor
He terrified me and my brother
*
Whilst he was home on leave
Our life was one of sadness and fear
He never had any time for my brother and me
Especially when he was on the beer
*
I used to pray that he would die
And leave my brother and me in peace
And my mother who we both adored
From his temper would find release
*
Who was this man you may be thinking
He was our father our mothers husband
And was away fighting against the Germans
To enable us to live in peace in our own land
*
Why did this man who warred for peace
Treat us with a fist of terror and fear
Should we sense the smell of whiskey
We knew our mother would shed a tear
*
For twenty long years and more
I hated this man who had given me life
Who had been so cruel to his two sons
And had persecuted his beautiful wife
*
Then one day I took him by the throat
And threatened to take his sorry life
For all the pain he had inflicted
On his children and his loving wife
*
He cried like the child that I once was
And begged that I should forgive him please
For once I saw the hurt within his crying eyes
That was the moment I suddenly realised
*
I was no better a man than he had been to me
My eyes filled with tears and I started to cry
I took him in my arms and told him I'm sorry
I knew I had to forgive him before he should die
*
For the next five years we made up for the past
We never again talked of the hurt and pain
Sadly the time came when my father passed away
I'm so happy I forgave him and mother did the same
*
I love you dad and hope your resting in peace
And I want you to know your forever on my mind
I don't profess I am a particularly religious man
But I now realise why they say love is blind
*
